Initial Ideas
When thinking about my exam question staircases, I thought about some initial ideas that I could then develop further to eventually create my final piece.
IDEA 1- My first idea was to compare and contrast two different types of staircases, abandoned ones, prominently found in derelict buildings, with staircases that are very manicured and well looked after. I would focus on photographing manicured staircases that are mainly made out of very aesthetically industrial and non organic materials such as glass, metal concrete. I would like to be able to showcase what can happen to stairs if abandoned and left over time without care and love and if possible be able to tell a background story within my photographs. For example for one of my images of derelict stairs, I may have an abandoned arm-chair with a teddy bear on it in the background of the stairs, to signify that there once was life there and there very well be life there again.
IDEA 2- Another idea I had was to simply show the patterns that are unknowingly created within staircases. This project would be simple with all of my images, mounted on the wall with two rows of five. I would go onto the streets and photograph any staircases that I found that had a pattern that had been created on the staircase. These patterns may have been created from things such as cracks in the stairs, rubbish left on the stairs, moss or nature on the stair that has grown over time, various other components such as food or stains created from things such as rainwater or spilt drinks may have also created patterns on the stairs.
IDEA 3- My third idea developed from my second idea in terms of moss and nature covering stairs. I thought about showcasing two different types of steps which is similar to my first idea, steps that have been covered in nature and manicures stairs. For this idea, I want to show how nature is taking over and reclaiming something very man-made. No matter what is built by humans, such as stairs, nature always finds a way to reclaim the earth, through moss and ivy as well as weeds and various other plants. If I am to develop this idea further, my initial idea for presentation is to simply have the images mounted on the wall, with six rows compromising of two images, an image of stairs that have been taken over by nature next to an image of a very aesthetically man-made set of stairs.
IDEA 4- Another idea I had for the question staircases was to show what stairs can lead too. I would have three sets of steps mounted up next to each other on the wall, all leading to different places at the top. One would lead to multiple buildings, possibly similar to subway steps, another to a very posh and high class area, possible with people walking around, walking their dogs and keeping separate from each other, and the third to a less high class area of living, where the people are sitting talking on the street and the children are playing with a football as well as a skipping rope. I want to show the different paths people can be taken too with the stairs leading the way.
IDEA 5- The last idea I had was to simply show the various different objects that can be found on staircases in peoples everyday lives. These objects ranged from homeless people trying to find somewhere to sleep for the night to rubbish which compromised of various things such as wrappers and cans.
Statement of Intent
In my staircases project I want to explore the decaying of staircases. I want to contrast and compare images of well looked after, grand staircases with staircases in derelict and abandoned buildings. I want to show how something that may have once been loved and cherished has slowly rotted away as it hasn't had the care and love it once did. My photographers Florence Capalin and Henk Van Rensburg both photograph abandoned buildings and the staircases in these buildings. It is from their work that my inspiration for the images of derelict and abandoed staircases is going to come from. My third photographer Louis Bjorling photographs the opposite kind of stairs to my other photographers. She photographs well looked after, modern looking staircases which is something I also want to do in my work. This is where the contrast will come into my work. I am going to contrast derelict stairs with well-looked after stairs through combining all three of my photographers in my work.
Due to the unreliability of good locations for photo-shoots for my project, I have decided not to carry on with this idea any more, but to instead explore a different idea that I will be able to photograph easily and without constraints.

New Statement of Intent
The exam question I have chosen to explore for my project is staircases. Stairs are found in peoples everyday lives and therefore are reflective of human civilisation. I am going to explore the idea of manicured well looked after stairs that are found in front of businesses as well as peoples homes. I want to show the effect of a corporate influece on things such as stairs. I am then going to contrast tehe manicured stairs with stairs that have been abandoned over the years. I am going to photograph stairs that nature has taken over to signify the time span in which the stairs have been left unkempt. I am interested in the idea of nature reclaiming it's natural environment and bring beauty back to something that was once lifeless and plain. I am using the techniques of photographers such as Melissa Lund, Jordan Luciano, kirt Tisdale and Kutlayev Dmitry to draw inspiration for my work. To carry out the idea for my project I am going to use Landscape photography with an architectural viewpoint. I am mainly goingn to focus on stairs that are found outside to create a stronger link between the two different sets of images.
