Florence Caplain

Florence Caplain

Florence Caplain is a photographer who is based in France. She takes pictures of derelict buildings but mainly focuses on the staircases within the buildings.

I chose to research Florence Caplain as one of my photographers because her work fits in with my theme and title. She takes images of derelict staircases in derelict buildings which is something that I want to explore in my work. I want to show that something that once was loved has been abandoned over time and how everything rots away at some point in ones life.

This image is of a set of staircases in an abandoned building. The staircases are the main focus within the image and then objects such as the piano and the corridor come into focus after the viewers eye has ventured to the staircase. Due to the red and cream colours used in this image as well as the piano, it gives the image a feeling of love. It shows that this house and staircase in particular was once loved however due to certain circumstances such as the family members all dying, or maybe moving away, the house has been abandoned for a long period of time hence the state it is in. The peeling wallpaper and the rotting floor and ceiling add a rough texture to the image, almost making it feel as if you are there yourself and can feel what is seen in the image.

Abandoned buildings to photograph-

  • Old farmhouse- plains road.
  • Forest Mills- Radford.
  • Small derelict church- near Colwick hall in Colwick park.
  • Rhinegold building.

Due to the change of idea in my project, I will not be using Florence Caplains work to develop my work later on as it now has no relevance. When I went out to get images in response to Florence Caplains work, I found it extremely difficult due to me not being able to access any derelict or abandoned buildings for safety reasons.
